Book review Inside Apple by Adam Lashinsky - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Book audit Inside Apple by Adam Lashinsky - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I simply got done with perusing Inside Apple by Adam Lashinsky and I was struck by two perceptions: 1: Apple gets a ton of things spot on and some different things precisely off-base. Ie-the structure driven turn of events, the duty to making extraordinary items and the pride their representatives can take in adding to that are on the whole phenomenal. Then again, Apples culture of dread, neurosis and doubt truly comes through in the book. Look at this article about Apples mystery police. I figure Apple could be significantly increasingly fruitful (hard as that is to envision) without the suspicion and awful conduct appeared in the book. In any case, I figure a few people will infer that Apple are butt faces and Apple is effective. Being a butt nugget makes you effective. 2: The Apple culture is totally at chances with the Apple brand. The Apple brand is about uniqueness and opportunity of articulation. The Apple culture is about mystery, consistency and doing what youre told. Is that duality supportable in the since quite a while ago bar? I dont think so. At last, I just cant make sense of from the book if Apple is a cheerful or miserable work environment. Unmistakably representative joy was unquestionably never a main concern for Steve Jobs and other top executives. Then again, their pride in their items and in working for Jobss vision satisfies them. Regardless, read the book it rocks. A debt of gratitude is in order for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most well known articles. The benefits of gamification in business - Hays Journal Viewpoint careers advice blog

The benefits of gamification in business - Hays Journal Through the use of game mechanics, gamification can tap into our innate sense of competition and desire to improve. And while many of us have adopted it in our personal lives, businesses often still struggle to use it effectively. But what benefits can gamification bring to an organisation, and how can companies engage their staff with it? What is gamification? Although the label gamification was coined in 2002, almost 20 years later many people still struggle to explain what it is. Research company Gartner defines the phenomenon as “the use of game mechanics and experience design to digitally engage and motivate people to achieve goals”. Gamification can include tracking of progress, and its impact has certainly been felt in our lives outside the workplace. The ‘Quantified Self’ is the cultural phenomenon of self-tracking through the use of technology. This may be by keeping count of the calories you consume or even by measuring the amount of sleep you have had. And while the term has been around since the 1970s, the rise of smartphones, GPS watches and fitness monitors in recent years has seen the number of people that track themselves skyrocket. Why has gamification failed to revolutionise the workplace? The theory has arguably been around long enough. Its ability to promote certain behaviours in the workplace was also first proposed in 2002. By 2011, Gartner was so confident in its potential that a report from the organisation predicted that by 2015, half of businesses would have gamified part of their processes. Yet a Penna study from 2015 found that 70 per cent of HR Directors said that it was not used in their workplace at all. By 2018, TalentLMS data still revealed that around half of employees had yet to experience gamification in the workplace. While its value as an industry is still growing each year, it seems that some organisations are still struggling to implement gamification technology in the first place or engage employees once they have. Early difficulties revolved around a lack of real clarity as to what gamification is and how it can help an organisation. This fed into poor initial results that have dampened enthusiasm among early adopters. There was also a belief that a one-size-fits-all approach could be used, regardless of the circumstances, the demographics of the teams involved or the processes being gamified. For the persistent, these early forays provided valuable lessons that rendered future projects more successful. Why does gamification work? Gamification works because it gives people control over what they’re doing, and also provides them with clear markers as to their progress to date, a map to guide them in future actions and prizes to clearly indicate when they’ve undertaken the right behaviours. Toss in the competitive element that most gamification programs employ and it’s easy to see why it is touted as an effective engagement tool. “Gameful design works through triggering factors of intrinsic motivation, such as our drives for social interaction, meaningful contributions, achievements, increasing challenges and self-challenges to demonstrate our competence, and giving us the ability to autonomously self-express,” Dr Lennart Nacke, Director of the HCI Games Group at the University of Waterloo’s Games Institute in Canada, says. “Designing for successful gamification means to engage people meaningfully with interactions that would otherwise be considered bland.” Arguably the most common form of gamification to date has been in learning and development, with 2019 research from Harvard Business School highlighting the potency of gamification on our ability to learn at work. The study found that applying gamification during the learning process had a strong impact on the willingness of employees to not only engage with learning, but to complete the programmes more consistently. Putting gamification into practice One company that can relate to the findings is Deloitte, which utilised gamification in its Deloitte Leadership Academy training programme. It found that after integrating gamification into the Academy, there was a 37 per cent increase in the number of employees returning to the digital platform every week. Deloitte aimed to stand out from previous implementations of gamification by making it very personal to each employee. For instance, the leaderboard is customised to each person, and only shows those nearest to them in the overall organisational standings. They also provide users with extensive onboarding to ensure that they are familiar with the mechanics of both the learning management system and the game elements behind it. The aim of this personalisation is to help each employee take ownership of their own training and development. They can then tailor the courseware provided through the platform in a way that best suits their needs and work patterns. How gamification can make learning fun Similar results have been achieved by home, car and life insurance company Farmers Insurance, which has been working with VR company Talespin to provide AI-driven training to employees across 500 different scenarios in the home insurance space. The training application is gamified to add an element of fun and competition to the process. Farmers Insurance says that the tool has helped to accelerate learning, build confidence among the workforce and reduce the time and cost associated with training programmes. Global software company Red Hat has also been using gamification and ‘serious game’ techniques as part of an immersive experience in its Open Innovation Labs. The company has used a serious game (a game designed for a primary purpose such as training, problem solving or skills-practising) that allows people to collaboratively build a Lego city, using the same methods and practices it wants employees to use with customers. The aim was to make learning more fun, and there have been immediate results, with the programme having one of the highest Net Promoter Scores the company has ever seen. Red Hat now wants to use gamification in other learning settings too. Making employees healthier using gamification Gamification can also be deployed to boost employee physical wellbeing. The importance of physical activity in the workplace was illustrated by a recent Australian study from Curtin University, which found that employees who walked during their lunch break were less stressed than their more sedentary peers. Projects such as Step Ahead: Zombies aim to use gamification to encourage activity among the workforce. The project includes a walking challenge, with participants having to escape a virtual zombie invasion courtesy of the steps they undertake in the real world. Employees are placed into teams, who are encouraged to get to a safe house as fast as possible, with the team element designed to encourage employees to support and help their colleagues be more active. Those who fail to walk enough are caught by the zombies and henceforth become part of the zombie team. The game has already seen considerable success, with the developers reporting that 20 per cent improvements in employee engagement were common among participating organisations. Lee County Schools district in Florida deployed the program for their workforce over a one-month period, and saw an 87 per cent participation rate, and health risk reduction savings of more than $132,000. What was most pleasing, however, is that the healthy behaviour changes stuck among employees. “We had people on our teams meeting before work to walk for an hour, and they’re still currently doing that months and months after the challenge is over. People still walk in the halls, but they’re also still doing those things that they weren’t doing beforehand,” reports Heather Parker, Employee Wellness Coordinator at Lee County Schools district. The benefit of prizes Perhaps the largest case study of gamifying wellbeing comes from the research undertaken by RAND Europe on behalf of health insurer Vitality, which worked with the Apple Watch and behavioural scientists such as Nobel prize winner Richard Thaler to create a gamified process to encourage activity among insurance customers. In total, around 400,000 Vitality consumers were equipped with the Apple Watch, and a range of incentives were provided to encourage activity, the ultimate one being the offer of keeping the device if they maintained a certain level of activity for two years. The data found that there was a 34 per cent increase in activity levels from across the research group, with the increase common across demographic profiles and previous activity levels. It’s an outcome that the team believes exemplifies the improvements that are possible. It can also be used to improve engagement, whether it’s retailer Target, which made the checkout process more like a game, or the pharmacy software company Omnicare, which gamified the customer service process, with leaderboards awarding the best performers cash prizes. Why gamification fails Alas, gamification is no guarantee of success. A study from Washington University highlights how some employees can try to manipulate these kinds of schemes, while Wharton research showed that trying to force fun at work often has the opposite effect than the one intended. These risks help to contribute to the 80 per cent or so of gamification projects that Gartner believes fail to deliver on set objectives. “Gamification has raced up the HR agenda in recent years as employers look to find creative and innovative ways to recruit, train and engage employees, as well as allow teams to learn about themselves and others,” John Hackston, Head of Thought Leadership at The Myers-Briggs Company says. “But gamified approaches aren’t a magic bullet and are often most effective when they are used together with more traditional methods.” This approach should involve the parking of any presumptions you may have, as there is no one demographic that is particularly in tune with gamification. Indeed, research from TalentLMS suggested that 90 per cent of workers aged 45+ felt they were likely to be more productive if work was more game-like, compared with 73 per cent of 18â€"24-year-olds and 87 per cent of 25â€"44-year-olds. Cultural challenges of gamification It can also be challenging to implement gamification across cultures, especially in multinational organisations with teams spread across the globe. “It has often been tricky to get everyone in a group to ‘play a game’; this can be due to cultural reasons (we work across the world and many different cultures), and sometimes down to personality,” Jeremy Brown, Director, Red Hat Open Innovation Labs â€" EMEA says. Brown adds that making gamification more collaborative and less formal has made its introduction easier. “We have found that working in teams can help us overcome most of the resistance to trying a new approach.” Gamification taps into many of the innate motivations that drive us to perform, and as such its promise remains rich across the working world. Implementing a gamified approach is not without risks, however, and these underpin the poor return seen in many gamification initiatives implemented to date. Organisations must offer a balanced approach that engages more of their workforce if they want to get the most from gamification. Did you enjoy this blog? So I will rather say I am not restricted to what you are telling me.Yuck. For what reason is it so difficult to tell individuals they are correct? Does it make you, thusly, wrong to give another person approval and a brief period in the sun?No! Not so much as a tad. Truth be told, the move causes others to feel valued. And particularly for pioneers - indeed, you are permitted to let others look savvy. You will pick up somebody's trust and show you are open to giving the individual the credit. From now on, hurl I don't dissent into the dustbin of destroyed expressions.I concur with you.Let somebody be correct. Top 10 Signs You Need To Update Your CV

Top 10 Signs You Need To Update Your CV When was the last time you updated your CV? Last week, six months ago, or even a year ago? Even if you updated it recently, your CV might still be stuck in a time warp and its time to bring it forward to 2014! In the current job market, you cant afford to be sending out an out-of-date and cliché-ridden CV and expecting results its important to make yourself stand out. Worried your CV is holding you back in your job search? Watch out for these top signs your CV is in need of a total makeover! 1) You list all of your GCSEs including grades This is a really common mistake, and one which is easily avoided. While you might be really proud of your school achievements, an employer isnt going to be blown away The only time its okay to include all of your GCSEs is if youre straight out of college or university because obviously theres not an awful lot of experience you can list on your CV. But if youve been working for a period of time and are still listing every single GCSE result you got, then its time to hit that delete key rapidly. You can save valuable space on your CV 2) No Social Media links When you apply for a job, employers or recruiters will almost definitely suss you out online. Obviously you need to make sure there is nothing incriminating about you online, but its also important to save the hiring manager valuable time and present this information on your CV. If you list your social media accounts (most importantly, LinkedIn), then it shows you are transparent and have nothing to hide. It also states your understanding of the recruitment process and how you may be researched before being offered an interview. Its not fun searching through a thousand Lauren Rileys on Twitter, so save the employer the hassle, and offer up your social media accounts on your CV. 3) You include every single job youve ever had Another important sign that your CV needs updating is that you include jobs that have no relevance to the position youre applying for. If youre applying for a digital marketing role, putting on your CV that you used to pull pints at the uni student union isnt really going to give you the edge over other candidates. Dont have much paid work experience? Thats fine. An employer will be more interested in relevant extra curricular activity, work experience and internships than part time jobs that dont affect your ability to perform in the role youre applying for. 4) You say Curriculum Vitae or CV on the top of the document This might sound petty, but isnt it obvious that youre attaching your CV? The employer isnt stupid. Its completely unnecessary to include this at the top of the CV. Also, it wastes valuable space. A bit like this next point 5) You include a photo Now, unless youre applying for a TV or modelling role, chances are you dont need to include a photo on your CV. A photo takes up lots of space on a CV, is completely unnecessary and, to be honest, is a bit weird. You arent going to be judged on what you look like for a role, so use the space to boast about your accomplishments and work experience rather than sticking your face on it. 6) You use too many clichés You wouldnt believe the amount of CVs we see here at Bubble Jobs with the same old clichés filling up the page like theres no tomorrow. So youre hard working, can work alone or as part of a team and work well under pressure? Thats great. Unfortunately, that tells the employer nothing about your actual skills or experience. Most of all, these phrases dont actually mean anything! Get rid of these phrases from your CV right away, and dont let them ever creep their way back in! 7) You use an old e-mail address Remember when you were 15 and you thought that hotbabexoxo@hotmail.com was the best e-mail address ever? Well heres some news: youre not 15 anymore, you need a job and no one is going to hire you with a ridiculous e-mail address like that. It takes two minutes to set up a professional e-mail address. This should go without saying, but creating a normal e-mail address just using your name will place you in a much greater position. Also, having a dedicated job seeking e-mail will allow you to keep on top of applications in one dedicated inbox. 8) You Dont Include Accomplishments Did you increase your companys social media following Its no use listing your duties and responsibilities without stating what you actually accomplished in your previous position. Hiring manager and recruiters love numbers, so give them lots to digest (as long as theyre good!) 9) You list boring interests Interests isnt a vital section of a CV, but it might just sell you to an employer. Are you a Liverpool FC season ticket holder? Imagine if the interviewer was too! It gives you something to bond over and may, when it comes down to it, seal the deal! Does your interests section say something like fitness, reading and watching TV? SNORE! If you take part in an evening class, are part of a sports team or have an interesting hob 10) No response to applications If you still dont believe me that your CV need updating, then just look at your previous job applications. Have you been sending your CV out for months and not one person has got back to you? Then maybe its not your cover letter, or your experience, maybe its your CV? Heed my advice and give it a new year makeover before you start applying for more jobs. So there we have it, top 10 signs that your CV needs updating! Do you agree with these points, or have any of your own to include? Let me know in the comments below, or on Twitter @BubbleJobs!

Follow Your Dreams#8230; Even if the Journey Makes you Uncomfortable

Follow Your Dreams#8230; Even if the Journey Makes you Uncomfortable Follow Your Dreams#8230; Even if the Journey Makes you Uncomfortable In this way, he remained in his old neighborhood and worked for the following year to set aside cash. Throughout the late spring of 2013 he handled an entry level position with a PR Agency. The organization was headquartered in New York, however his position would expect him to move to San Francisco. In this way, for an entry level position, he gathered his sacks and got a plane from Ohio to the Bay Area. For the initial three months, he remained with a family companion and during the following three months he lived in a lodging. My companion was employed as a fulltime junior record official in December 2013, and simply a month ago he at last moved into his own home with flat mates. In spite of the fact that David didn't generally know anybody, he got and moved about 2,500 miles from his customary range of familiarity to seek after his fantasies. He wasn't reluctant to be awkward. At that point we have Tierra, additionally a 2012 alumni bearing in mind the end goal of moving to Washington D.C. what's more, going to graduate school. Also, in spite of the fact that she was acknowledged for the fall 2012 semester, she was unable to stand to move from Phoenix to our country's capital. However, Tierra didn't abandon her fantasies. She conceded her enlistment for one year and moved in with a companion in L.A. There, Tierra maintained four sources of income including jobs as a barista and retail partner to set aside cash for her pending move. This youngster had a four year certification, yet she worked numerous random temp jobs just to get by. At last, in May of 2013, Tierra had the option to move to DC, locate a couple of flat mates and start graduate school. Like David, Tierra wasn't apprehensive about being awkward. Rewind back to 2011 when another companion of mine, Demetrius, moved on from school. He accepted a stage out without any doubt by moving from the southwest toward the east coast (New York) for a temporary job. Demetrius worked there for one year, in any event, taking on independent occupations to get by. He was at last employed on full time and afterward advanced after one more year. In only two years, he had the option to twofold his pay, be advanced on numerous occasions and even buy his own loft. David, Tierra and Demetrius weren't reluctant to be awkward. A CareerBuilder concentrate a year ago found that 44 percent of laborers said they would move for the correct activity. However, 41 percent of individuals who migrated experienced forlornness and uncertainty and 16 percent felt achy to visit the family. In any case, the examination additionally found that an incredible 77 percent of laborers who moved in the course of the most recent year detailed that they were content with the move and didn't lament their choice. Laborers said they encountered the most advantages of moving in the accompanying zones: Making a new beginning (30%) Making new companions (31%) Having new encounters they wouldn't have had anyplace else (29%) Acquiring at a more significant level gave their family additionally spending choices (27%) Better long haul vocation openings (22%) Zone was more pleasant and schools were better (19%) I believe it's consistently persuasive and urging to hear examples of overcoming adversity since it gives us that things are conceivable. Obviously, the decision to migrate to follow your fantasies isn't generally so high contrast when you have a family or different duties. In any case, in case you're youthful, an ongoing alumni, single without any children, or simply don't have numerous genuine commitments to your present habitation, I ask… why not? In the event that you are an ongoing alumni or unmarried with a family, presently is absolutely an opportunity to travel and experience new places. Try not to agree to where you are if it's not assisting with the quest for your objectives. Life is tied in with facing challenges, and on the way to accomplishing your fantasies you will undoubtedly be met with affliction. That doesn't mean you ought to permit the dread of the obscure or the awkward sentiment of venturing outside your usual range of familiarity to prevent you from seeking after your objectives. As the colloquialism goes, If from the start you don't succeed, attempt, attempt once more. Regardless of whether you face a challenge and it doesn't work out, you can generally attempt, attempt once more. Furthermore, the best individuals today arrived at this status since they weren't reluctant to attempt new things, step out on trust, endeavor to arrive at their objectives, and generally significant, be awkward.

Networking is Recycling

Networking is Recycling Donna Fisher, author of Power Networking, writes that “Networking is a form of recycling. Think about all the information that comes across your desk in a given week.   Instead of using things up and throwing them away, take the value that is there for you and think ‘Who else would be interested in this information?’”   In a world filled with millions of messages and opportunities, it can be almost impossible to keep up.   Wouldn’t it be nice if you had other people looking out for something of interest to you? When you get a flier for a workshop, an invitation to a meeting, or see a blog post that interests you, do you pass it on?   Networking is the art of connecting people with information, resources, or other people.   To become skilled at it, you’ll need to practice every day.   Take a look around your desk, inbox, or home office right now.   What do you have that someone else could use?   If it’s paper, send it off (an investment of almost fifty cents, of course, but still a small price) with a handwritten note.   If it’s electronic, even better â€" include a quick note that says you’re thinking of the recipient and her success. Better yet, invite someone to attend the event with you.   Event organizers will be delighted to increase their expected attendance, and you’ll get the benefit of connecting more deeply with someone while you’re meeting new people and learning something. Malcolm Gladwell, in his groundbreaking book The Tipping Point, calls some people “Connectors.”   He says that there really are a few people who seem to “know everybody.”   These people tend to meet and connect to more people than the average person, and they seem to take pleasure in connecting others as well.   Gladwell says that the number of people you “know” (he defines the term very broadly, to include not just friends, but people you might only be able to name) should roughly double for you between the ages of 20 and 40.   But some people have a network of acquaintances that is four or five times the average person’s. These are one of “the Few” that Gladwell talks about â€" the Connectors.   One of the ways in which they connect with people is to be thinking often â€" if not always about their network.  What do people need?   What do they want?   Who told me last week that he was thinking about moving to Cincinnati? Was it Jamie’s daughter that just graduated from Harvard and was looking for an internship?   You get the idea. Being a Connector might not be a natural fit for you, but it is a skill that can be acquired and improved. Gladwell says that most of us cultivate acquaintances for the purpose of finding out if they will become a friend.   If you think of them simply as a piece of your valuable network, you cast a different light on their relationship to you.   Gladwell talks about how Connectors are made: “…their ability to span many different worlds is a function of their personality, some combination of curiosity, self-confidence, sociability and energy.” Sounds like something everybody could use more of. Are you a Connector?   Malcolm Gladwell provides a quick online test of your network here.

8 Reasons Your LinkedIn Messages Get Ignored

8 Reasons Your LinkedIn Messages Get Ignored You are spending lots of time messaging people on LinkedIn.But it seems like no one cares enough to write you back.Has the entire LinkedIn database stopped caring about helping others? No, that is not likely the case.People feel inclined to ignore your LinkedIn messages due to your actions. Here are 8 reasons why your messages never get a reply.8. You Do Not Clarify Why You Are MessagingAre you saying this simple phrase in your messages?“I work in [industry] and I am reaching out to you because [reason].”Simple, right?Yet many people forget to do it and send LinkedIn messages like this instead.“Please connect. I look forward to networking with you.”Why are you networking on LinkedIn?Do not expect others to figure it out for you; they will not take the time to do so.7. You Say Too Much in Your MessagesThere is also such a thing as explaining too much in your LinkedIn messages.Unfortunately, very few people will read long messages on LinkedIn.Try to keep your communications under 75 characters.Never ramble on in your LinkedIn messagesor you will have people wondering:“Why is this person revealing so much information on LinkedIn?”How do you know if a LinkedIn message is too long?Simple. If people have to scroll down several times to finish reading, it's too long.6. You Don't Know the Purpose of LinkedInLinkedIn is a social network that helps people network to find jobs. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity to grow a career and/or find work. However, some may try to use it for reasons other than finding work. These messages are the easiest to ignore because it appears someone is making the mistake of using LinkedIn as a dating website or Facebook account. For example, see the image below of a LinkedIn message:How can you honestly reply to a message like that?Personally, I chose to ignore it. LinkedIn is not a dating website.5. Your Messages Are Not TargetedEveryone should be optimistic during their job search. It is mandatory for career survival! However, ap proaching your job search with the mindset, “You never know,”leads to you send LinkedIn messages that get ignored, like this one:A person may glance at this message. They may think about it for a second. But ultimately, the LinkedIn message will be ignored because it has been sent to a person in an unrelated industry in another country.Sending messages without a targeted industry, person, or job in mind is time wasted in your job search.4. Your Grammar and Profile Are a MessUsing unprofessional photos of yourself and sending messages with poor grammar are two quick ways to get your LinkedIn message ignored. In fact, they trigger the same thought that a profile must be spamming. Some of the most well-established professionals still make the mistake of creating profiles on LinkedIn, only to ignore them completely. They fail to focus on creating a professional-looking photo, summary, headline, job experience, or description of education. In addition, if/when they start messaging people o n LinkedIn, they use text-speak and poor grammar. This all combines to sends a message that the person may not understand what defines professionalism on LinkedIn.3. You Do Not Seem Connected to AnyoneLinkedIn is celebrating its 17th anniversary in May 2020.Whether you started using LinkedIn yesterdayor 15 years ago, there has got to be someone in your school or company that you can connect with.Do not ignore your 2nd and 3rd-degree connections on LinkedIn.If your LinkedIn profile shows that you are not connected to more than 500+ people, your messages will get ignored for a simple reason.People think you are not using LinkedIn enough. Why should they bother networking with you?Bring your profile to life by talking to people and being more open with profile visibility settings.2. You Never Offer Anything to AnyoneDo you create LinkedIn posts? Do you comment or like any posts? Are you offering information to others about their careers? What do you know? Who can benefit from what you kn ow?If you are offering nothing on LinkedIn to the community, the community seems to return the favor.1. You Forget the Golden Rule of LinkedInLinkedIn success is usually the result of “how much you give to others” through articles and posts about real workplace topics. It is not about “getting what you want when you ask.”Try giving back to people in your profession and watch how quickly people reply to your messages!
